Presenting - A Walk Along Kingston Road To eye A Wealth Of Creativity And Shopping Choices

My recent history tour with Gene Domagala through the eastern and northern part of the Beach introduced me to the Kingston Road area and the historic point that it played in the improvement of East Toronto. Gene also introduced me to Carolyn Pitre who helps to run the Kingston Road firm Community. through an interview with Carolyn I discovered that the Kingston Road area in the middle of Main road and Victoria Park Avenue is an involving and diverse shopping district on its own right, so this sunny Saturday morning I set out to recognize some of the merchants and products on offer along Kingston Road.

The first place I visited is housed in a beautifully renovated previous movie theatre; beautiful photo windows light up the tasteful interior of Memories Now and Then, a high-end consignment store owned by Nadine Steinberg. Nadine welcomed me to her store and explained that her store features pick pre-owned furniture, rugs, china, lamps as well as vintage jewelry. She added that all the pieces that she carries are upscale and hand-picked.

I continued my stray along Kingston Road and dropped in at the Pegasus community Thrift Store, run by volunteers for the Pegasus community task for Adults with extra Needs. Marie Perrotta, the founder and menagerial director of this non-profit organization, was in the store together with a volunteer. I had already had the opening to meet Marie on previous occasions and was deeply impressed by her society and her dedication to adults with extra needs. During the week adults with disabilities run the store, assisted by staff and volunteers. The store's merchandise includes items produced by the agenda participants, along with hand-made greeting cards, soup and cookie mixes and bookmarks.

On the weekend a range of volunteers come out from the community to help. Naomi Drayton told me that she usually volunteers for Pegasus. Every Saturday she comes in for a few hours. She mentioned that she has a young daughter, and her volunteering at Pegasus gives her a great opening to get out of the house and socialize with people from the community. In addition, she does it for a good cause since all the sales earnings generated in the thrift store goes towards the Pegasus community Project.

Naomi used to live in a small town exterior of Toronto and just moved to the Beach about a year ago. She loves the area and enjoys all the thrift shops along Kingston Road and does most of her shopping colse to here. Naomi added that she is going to be living in this area for a long time and she wants her daughter to grow up in the Beach.

Another someone in the store piped up and said "I just opened a store a few doors down. Why don't you come visit me too?" So I decided to pop in at Flip a few steps west of the Pegasus community Thrift Store. The owner Fiona Bramzell and her five year old daughter Paige greeted me warmly. Fiona, originally from England, opened her store last November. Flip is a consignment store that features used clothing for children from newborns to twelve year olds. In addition, it also carries some clothing items for adults.

For now Fiona's store is open three days a week while Fiona still holds down another part-time job at Savoury Grounds Coffee Company, a beloved coffee shop in the area. But she is planning to open six days a week in the near future. In addition, she is currently applying to come to be a copy editor for Harlequin Publishing and added that she has written any non-fiction articles for separate websites. A lot more people are becoming aware of the unique shopping opportunities along Kingston Road, and she has noticed a definite trend of couples and families involving back to the city from the suburbs. The Beach in singular has come to be a very trendy area, and numerous real estate improvement projects attest to the revival in the Kingston Road area.

Jane added that her store has also come to be a meeting place for discrete neighbourhood residents. She told me of one lady who oftentimes comes in, pulls up one of the chairs and chats for half the afternoon. Jane likes to keep things light and fun, and is glad she made her transition into entrepreneurship.

work by artisans from all over Canada. Jewellery, ceramics, glass,
textiles, woodworking, illustration and photography are well represented,
and all pieces are unique. Sharon Bauman, the manager, showed me through the
store and first pointed out the Gingerbread Studio range of canvasses,
wall plaques and fridge magnets. Norm Stiff of Gingerbread, in Elora,
illustrates a range of images along with old streetcars and iconic themes
from Toronto and the Beach.

Wellington earthenware by previous Beach potters Maggie Murdoch and David Drown,
is another featured line. Jewellery however, is the main focus, with work by Neska of Edmonton, Bejewel in Fredericton, and Liza Ridout here in Toronto,
to name a few. Sharon demonstrated a "shimmer": a thin, ornamental scarf
with a range of textures that is used instead of conventional jewelry,
made by Leslie Ross in Brampton. She adds that when owner Nancy Van Ihinger
came up with a name for the store, ooh aah!, it turned out to be the exquisite
choice to best reflect the reaction of the customers. When in the shop you
can often hear people oohing and aahing over the items in the window. Today
ooh aah! is a beloved destination for people who are looking for that
special something.

The façade of another neighbourhood store caught my attention, so I decided to pop in at Stamps, Cards and Mailables. I introduced myself to the owner who was sitting behind the counter. The miniature she saw my name in print, she pronounced it correctly in German, and as I talked to her a bit more, I detected an Austrian accent. (Being from Austria myself, I can spot an accent from my home country with roughly 100% accuracy). Elfi (Elfriede) Walter confirmed and said that she arrived in Canada from the province of Lower Austria in 1960. Together with her husband, she opened Stamps, Cards and Mailables in 1973, and hers is right on one of the most established market in the neighbourhood.

Originally her store was specialized in philatelic items because her husband was a passionate stamp collector. He also used to handle appraisals for other stamp collectors. Since his death Elfi has converted the store into a more general gift store that still carries philatelic items, but also gift cards, post cards, and a range of books. In addition, Elfi also sells stamps and handles some post office duties for her clients.

Stamps, Cards and Mailables is open Mondays to Saturdays from 9 am to 5 or 6 pm. Elfi said that in the summer she usually closes for about two months; she truly deserves the rest and recreation after so many years in business. I asked her if her store has a website, and she responded "not yet". But she is seriously reasoning of taking a basic web produce course in the spring. There is nothing like instruction and broadening your mind to keep you young, and Elfi enjoys studying and meeting people.

Art expresses itself in many ways along Kingston Road, and at Celestial Stained Glass art is not only sold, it is also produced and taught. Alicia Niles, the manager, explained that Celestial Stained Glass was opened 28 years ago and that this is their third location. They moved in last October and like the new larger floor space. Celestial Stained Glass sells stained glass and hot glass beads for jewelry making; they also fix and restore existing stained glass pieces and produce practice stained glass art for extra customer requests. In addition, the back of the store features a teaching studio, the location of specialty stained glass courses and hot glass beadmaking taught at the basic, intermediate and advanced levels.

Alicia added that all the store sells is truly made right on site and supplies for stained glass and hot bead making are on offer also. She also demonstrated the hot glass beads to me and explained that glass rods of separate colours are melted with a blow torch and wound colse to a metal rod. any colours can be melted together, creating involving colour effects. These hot glass beads are then annealed in a kiln to safe them, following which they can be turned into jewelry.

I started to realize that Kingston Road is a real hotbed of artists and artisans, and my next stop took me into the realm of textile arts. Quilters organery is a very specialized store that supplies all a quilter could ever need. Sharon Long, the owner, indicated that she has owned the store for about 11 years now. When I asked her if she had always been complex in the textile arts firm she laughed and said that she used to be an accountant who used quilting as a method of stress release. Sharon explained that both accounting and quilting involve a lot of math. When her firm got bought out she was offered a severance package and decided to open her own quilting store.

Quilters organery has more than 1000 bolts of cotton fabric for sale, exterior all colours, shades and designs. A room in the back of the store has been turned into a classroom where any instructors teach separate levels of quilting. Most courses are 10 weeks long, and beginners classes start with a "sampler quilt" where every block encompasses a separate technique. For many of the regular quilters, mostly women, but also some men, Quilters organery is a great place to socialize and pursue a joint passion. Sharon also has a heart for the community and her 30 hour "Quilt for a Cure Quilt-a-thon" will run from noon on March 30 to 6 pm on March 31 with proceeds going to breast cancer research.

Well, any voyage writer gets a bit tired and hungry, and after all these interviews it was right on time for lunch. Just a few steps east of Quilters organery is The Pastry Shop, a cute miniature neighbourhood café that offers a wide range of ready foods such as soups, patties, sandwiches, rice dishes, curries, salads and quiches. Baked goods consist of croissants, breads, and cookies; specialty items such as packaged coffees, Kahlua and Bailey's flavoured chocolates and a range of teas round out the merchandise.

I ordered a vegetarian curry rice with chick pea curry and an old-style cherry flavoured soda and sat down for a bit to quench my ravenous hunger. The curry was delicious, spicy but not overbearing. Adrianna Underwood was attending to a continuous stream of customers, and when she had a consolidate of free minutes she explained that the curries are some of the most beloved dishes and come in seven separate flavours: chicken, beef, chickpea / spinach, cauliflower, dal (lentil), eggplant and potato. The gingerbread and sugar cookies are also favourites, along with the brownies and blondies (a vanilla cake with fruits). looking at the appetizing options in the display case I could right on understand why this place is popular.

Appropriately strengthened I continued my explorations along Kingston Road and popped into The Great Escape, a second-hand bookstore owned by retired teachers Bruce and Marg Ewing. Bruce was just inundated with a large shipment of books and did not have a lot of time to talk, but he explained that his store was named after a movie and the fact that reading is a great escape.

Bruce mentioned that his son just recently gave them a website as a gift for Christmas, although Bruce himself is not all that web-savvy. The Great flee offers an opening to buy, sell and trade used books, and it also carries a selection of new bestsellers. The store carries more than 5000 books, consisting mostly of paperback fiction, but also includes a selection of non-fiction, art, history, sports, music and troops books. A well-stocked children section rounds out the selection at The Great Escape.

Last but not least I dropped in a the Cobalt Gallery, a clay studio and gallery where I had popped in before, but Annette Hansen, the owner, had been busy in a underground earthenware session. Now the class was terminated and she was free, and we had a opening to chat. Annette has been operating her earthenware shop for roughly three years now and also rents her space to optical artists. Her store features glass items, blown glass and jewelry in expanding to the clay pieces produced by Annette herself. In addition, Cobalt Gallery carries functional metal art by Weld-done Designs, a Toronto artists placed in the Dundas and Carlaw area.

My walk along Kingston Road had come to an end, but I had discovered a whole new world of shopping opportunities, of creativity, produce and craftsmanship. I also came over any places that offer studying opportunities for the general social to recognize how to produce art themselves. And I was astounded how many previous corporate employees had chosen to start a second vocation on Kingston Road. Not surprisingly the market along this East Toronto road have come to be a community conference place for many.

Keep the Mincemeat, I Want Chocolate

I awoke to rain this morning bouncing off the roof. I thought to myself, "well this isn't very Christmas like." My western friends have snow up to their eyeballs, and I have not so much seen two snowflakes put together. But then again I live in the Northeast, so I should be careful what I ask for. I could wake up tomorrow to a state emergency. I don't mind the snow so much, it is the sleet and frosty rain that I could do without.

I am so happy that I have had two days off in a row, I took benefit of sleeping in. I work 6 days a week, so sleeping in doesn't always pan out. If I do then the guilt sets in, because I wasted the day. Funny I feel that I may have had too much sleep.

Gingerbread House Recipe

Christmas at my grandparents house were very New Englandish. The same components were always in place. Hard sauce, ribbon candy, egg nog, mixed nuts, the book "Twas the night before Christmas", and the grandparent magic that made believing in Santa possible. My mother's parents loved Christmas, because it was a time when all their grandchildren came to visit. I remember playing Scrabble with my great-grandmother, and sharing saltines and butter mints. I remember she had the bottomless drawer of treasures that I spent hours pawing through. Unopened decks of cards, the smell of violets and lavender, sugar cubes, saltines, vintage cribbage board, blank stationary, butter mints, and an old fashioned tea ball were among the things I would find. Funny, I never grew tried of seeing at her treasures.

My grandmother used to serve mincemeat pie with hard sauce, and I think that it was a tradition that now, has been forgotten. As an adult, there are very few citizen that I have met that know what "hard sauce" is, never mind them legitimately eating a piece of mincemeat pie, once they knew what it was made out of. Hard sauce it not legitimately a sauce at all, it more or less resembles frosting and is spreadable. It is made from butter, rum, brandy, or whiskey and confectionery sugar. I remember it tasted of brandy and I was not very fond of it. But that was my first exposure to such an old recipe. It was made and then chilled, and settled on warm gingerbread, mincemeat pie, or plum pudding. The formula dates back to the 1800's.

Mincemeat pie, why, that is a whole separate story! For the longest time, oddly adequate being a chef, I never knew what mincemeat pie was, I just thought that it was a spicy raisiny pie. To tell you the truth it was not my favorite, it was low on my list of favorite desserts. On the occasion, that I had no choice, the pie never left a persisting impression on me, maybe because of the raisins and the title had the word "meat" in it. Oddly, not many stick to the customary process of manufacture mincemeat pie. It incites a "yuck" response from people, when they in fact find out that it contains whatever from minced meat, or suet. I remember my grandmother used suet. Which by the way is the hard fatty layer covering the liver in cattle. Yuck! Technology has a nifty way of taking the guesswork out of manufacture a mincemeat pie nowadays and jars of mincemeat pie filling can be found at your local supermarket.

In New England we have many desserts that are unique only to New England, whoopie pies, the Fluff used invented by a enterprise in Lynn, Massachusetts, Indian Pudding made with cornmeal, Boston Creme Pie, originating in Boston at the same home of the Parker House roll, and Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookies, invented in Whitman, Massachusetts. I love chocolate desserts so here is my twist on Boston Cream Pie.

Coco-Crazy Boston Cream Pie

Cake

1 cup butter
3/4 cups granulated sugar
3/4 cups light brown sugar
2 tsps vanilla extract
4 egg whites
2 eggs
2 1/4 cups all purpose flour
1/4 cup sifted cocoa
1/2 cup heavy cream
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 bottle cream soda
1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips.

Filling

1 cup milk
1 oz cornstarch
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
2 egg yolks
1 tsp butter
1/4 cup sugar
3 ozs semi sweet chocolate chips

Glaze

remaining chocolate left from 12 ozs holder which is about 3ozs
1/4 cup heavy cream
1 tsp butter

Preheat oven to 350F. Grease and flour 2/ 9in cake pans. Sift together all dry ingredients. In a mixing bowl cream butter and sugars, until light and fluffy. Add the egg whites, eggs and vanilla and mix until well incorporated. Alternate the dry ingredients with the cream soda and heavy cream. Beat well, fold in chocolate chips and divide evenly into 2 9" in cake pans. Bake until a toothpick inserted comes out clean, about 30 to 45 minutes. Cool completely. Meanwhile in a small bowl join 1/4 cup milk, cornstarch, pinch of salt, 2 egg yolks and vanilla. Mix well. In a small saucepan heat 3/4 cup milk, tsp butter, 1/4 cup sugar and 3 ozs chocolate chips till approximately scalding. Carefully ladle small amounts of the heated liquid into the egg yolk mixture, stirring constantly until both are about the same temperature, add the yolk combination to the saucepan and whisk until thickened, pour into a clean bowl, top with a piece of plastic wrap to forestall a skin from forming. To make the glaze heat the heavy cream and butter and pour over the remaining chocolate and let set for a minuscule or two, moderately stir and set aside. To assemble cake, spread cooled pastry cream over cooled cake lowest side up, place the second layer lowest side up on the filling. Carefully pour the glaze in the center of the cake and using a cake spatula spread the glaze to fall down the sides of the cake. Let set at least an 1 hour and then enjoy.

Holiday project - Make a Delightful Gingerbread House Using Graham Crackers

This Christmas make a Graham Cracker House.

Needed items:
1) A box of Graham crackers.
2) White canned frosting or make your own. The frosting will be used for gluing Graham crackers together, gluing candy to roof/sides/plate, and for snow.
3) Gum drops. Use: Colorful fence.
4) Shoestring red licorice. Use: Door and window frames.
5) Large marshmallows. Use: Snowmen.
6) Tiny marshmallows. Use: Kid snowmen.
7) M&M's or Skittles. Use: ornamental siding.
8) Starburst Candy. Use: Stack up for a chimney. Put candy on its side and make a fence nearby house. Can also be roof tiles or pavers to house.
9) Snack size candy bar. Use: Chimney.
10) Cake sprinkles.
11) Other candy. Have your child use their imagination for what it can be used for on house or in yard.
12) Stiff paper plate.

Gingerbread House Recipe

You will build the house on the paper plate. Start with walls of the house as if you were building a house of cards. The Graham crackers will be the walls. You might need to hold the crackers steady as your child glues them together with frosting. Frost three edges of each cracker. Place bottom of frosted cracker upright on plate. Let dry a bit. Then build an A frame roof (at an angle place two sides of Graham crackers together). Frost wall tops and ends of roof together to keep frame up. Hold and let dry. You can also make a flat roof.

At this point make a decision. Will you be frosting the whole house or just the roof? If you want to do the whole house I recommend you start with the sides. Using a thin rubber spatula gently frost the sides. Figure a doorway in front using shoestring licorice. Do the same for any windows you want. Place M&M's and/or Skittles all over wall siding. When done, frost the roof. Either use Starbursts for roof tiles or decorate the roof using M&M's, Skittles and tiny marshmallows. For a festive look put cake sprinkles on top. On a flat roof your child can stack up five Starbursts for a chimney. Or they can use a snack size candy bar on an A frame roof for a chimney. Once house is decorated to your child's satisfaction they can do the yard. Spread frosting nearby house. Stack up three marshmallows to make a snowman. Dab a bit of frosting in-between marshmallows to keep snowman up. Use sprinkles to make a face on snowperson. You can stack tiny marshmallows to make kid snowperson. Make a walkway to front door using Starbursts. Place gum drops all nearby house as a colorful fence.
